Barneys for Short

Blue Double Laced Silver Barnevelders are a Stunning and Beautiful Variety of the Barnevelders. The Blue Coloration follows the Black, Blue, Splash color breeding genetics. This breed variety while very stunning, is not a productive layer. Laying between 100-170 eggs per year.  This breed is not common and this variety is more rare, especially in the Blue and Splash colors. There is a lot of room for improvement with this variety, from breed type, clean silver, improvement on production, etc.

Breeding Troubles @ Cross B

This picture above is part of the founding flock that was brought in to Cross B. A black/ silver hen and a blue/ silver cock with some red leakage.

In 2023, we bred Blue to Blue from the mating of the above individuals. At the end of 2023 we did not have a good year. The line I have, was not heavily inbred and just seemed to be weak. Offspring did not thrive, parents passed, or molted to being very dirty silver (red leakage shown through).

In 2024, what survived I was not happy about, cockerels were ugly from bad pattern to bad type. Hens type was good, but pattern messy or lots of leakage, and eggs were small. I decided I would breed them and see what happens. Not many were raised as the cockerels were weak and weren't servicing their ladies.  It was just a big mess really. Was about to throw in the towel. So right now (November of 2024) we have 3 hens hatched in 2023, 2 pullets hatched 2024, and 3 cockerels hatched 2024. 3 of these birds are splash laced, the rest are blue laced. Egg size is on the small side and more tan in color than a dark brown.

Plans for 2025

Well, we have dirty silver lineage, small eggs, and weak constitution on these birds. Why would I tell you this? Because I am an honest breeder and there is always something you have to work through with a breed but this one has many challenges currently. But there is a lot of room for improvement!

So 2025.

When breeding starts and pullets egg size is determined we will begin making decisions on which ladies are utilized. Preference will be to breed blue to blue this year, to be able to get all 3 colors in the offspring.

Pictures will come on the Facebook page to let y'all see what we are working with. The 2024 chicks are looking very nice actually and seem to be very healthy. They do not and will not get any special treatment. We are a survival of the fittest and zero medication operation. Health and Vigor will be top of mind when it comes to selecting next year's breeders.

Hatching Eggs

The Tan egg to the left of the blue egg is the darkest color I have seen the Barnevelders lay from my flock. We will not be determining a price for Barney eggs until we see how the ladies will lay, how fertile the cocks are, and how vigorous the chicks will be. IF all performs well, we will be offering Hatching Eggs starting in Late Spring. Price will be determined then and listed here for 2025
