CREAM LEGBAR

Auto-Sexing Blue Egg Layers!

AUTO-SEXING. WHAT?

What in the world does this mean? Cream Legbars have a barring gene which the cockerels at hatch display Prominently by a pronounced white spot on the top of their heads.
So your meaning... we can get sexed blue egg layers at hatch? YES! in 2023 we will be offering sexed Cream Legbar Pullets at a day old!

OUR FLOCK'S ORIGINS

Cross B procured a Quad of Cream Legbars from a local breeder in 2022. 1 Pullet right off the bat in the quarantine process, did not make the cut and was dispatched from the flock. The trio left, is where the breeding strain will come from. We have hatched out chicks from the breeder's selection and Feb of 2023 have started collecting eggs again for incubation. We also procured a group of Cream Legbar Pullets from a local store. These will be hatchery chicks, BUT we will select best type and egg color to continue with and place them with a cockerel from the breeder stock offspring, when they come of age. Some of this group will be used in some Egg Color Breeding Projects as well. In 2024 these two flocks were integrated together, selecting those who were closest to the breed standard.

BLUE EGGS

Yes they are really, Blue Eggs! As you can see in this picture our ladies lay blue eggs. The Standard for Cream Legbars says their eggs can be Blue to Green. We will be only allow hens and cocks in the flock that came from blue eggs (cocks case) and lay blue eggs (hens case).

If you ever have a Question, do not hesitate to ask, wether you would like some current pictures etc. Our goal, if you are buying our poultry is to make sure you know what you are getting and satisfied to the best of our ability.

TRANSPARENCY

We are very new to this breed and color and as such this page will evolve as our eye evolves. But we will work with where we are and what we've got. There are many faults and one of them we are seeing in some of our offspring is red leakage as in this cockerel.

Cream Legbars: News

Cream Legbars @
Cross B Hens N Heifers

After 2024's Breeding Season we greatly dispersed our flock of Cream Legbars, partially because there is not a big demand for these birds. We do plan on keeping about 5 females and 2 males back, in order to continue the breed and satisfy our personal colored egg basket needs. We will still always select towards the standard. But if you are interested in Cream Legbars make sure you get on the waiting list for them, as they will only be hatched or eggs collected as needed.

Cream Legbars or
Crested Cream Legbars?

You will see people advertise their Cream Legbars as Crested Cream Legbars, we do not. BUT not because they do not display a crest. ALL of our Cream Legbars are Crested. Some more than others. But as you dive into this Breed you will learn that all of them are supposed to be crested. So those that are not, were just poorly selected. We do have 1 hen from the original Breeder Quality stock that has a very small crest, she is still in the flock because I believe she is superb in all other ways. So as Crested Cream Legbars is not the correct name and a little redundant, we will just call them by their name: Cream Legbars.

WANT A COCKEREL FOR MEAT?

Great Heritage Meat to Grow

and put in your Freezer!

So send me a message to let me know you are interested in buying my cockerels out of the hatcher. These will go Quick!

Out of the Hatcher .50c Each

2-7 Days $1 Each

1-2 Week $2 Each

3-4 Week $4 Each

Raising Heritage Birds for Meat is much different than raising Broilers for meat especially different then the Cornish Cross which is ready to go at 8 weeks. For Heritage birds your butcher date is 16 weeks typically. I recommend you put them in a chicken tractor, Joel Salatin style, and put them on fresh grass daily. I also recommend you pick up a book called "50 Ways To Eat Cock" you can usually pick it up for cheap! Under $10 but it is about cooking Heritage birds not something that is has a ton of water weight like the Cornish cross.

HISTORY

The Power of Selection is an Amazing Thing!

In 1928 a British Horticulturist, Clarence Elliot, brought back some blue egg laying chickens from Chile. See South America had a mutation in their populations of chickens that caused eggs to change from white to blue! He brought these birds back to the Cambridge University and gave them to R. C. Punnett and Michael Pease, in 1930. (Did you recognize that name? Punnett? Punnett square... Yep that is him!) These two men worked on many sex-linked breeds of chickens but in 1937 is when the first Legbars were created, the Gold Legbar.

More to come later.... Check out the Cream Legbar Club of America for more details!
