Pendesencas at Cross B
It’s April of 2024, and we have a gorgeous fertile Crele Penedesenca Cockerel on our ladies! This cockerel came from Sandhill Preservation Center as a chick in the fall of 2023. We have had a few more of the Crele Penedesencas from Sandhill arrive this spring as well as a fulfillment on last year's order. Our ladies are 2 year olds now and came from Privett Hatchery. They lay a consistently dark large egg. Very productive ladies. One lady stayed consistently dark dark like chocolate and like what people want in a Black Copper Marans egg. So this year (2024) we will be offering true Crele Penedesenca eggs, chicks and so on to you! First batches of their eggs in and a test batch at a customers is 100% fertility! He does his job. A RARE DARK BROWN EGG LAYER
HISTORY
This breed originated in Spain in a region known as the Penedes. The farmers in this region had birds that were known for their dark eggs. As with most Wars during the 20th Century the Penedesenca breed went into favor during the war and then fell off after the wars were over.

There was a couple Spanish men in the 20th century that helped preserve these birds. Antonio Jorda is a Spanish Vet in 1982, began work to preserve the breed.
BREED CHARACTERISTICS
The Penedesenca Breed is very rare but has a few defining characteristics.
- The Kings Comb or Carnation Comb: The Comb starts out as a single comb and at the back expands with side sprigs. This can look like a cross or a mass of side sprigs. The Empordanesa has this comb as well.
- Red Brown Dark Eggs: The Penedesenca well as the Empordanesa Breed have unusually dark brown eggs. I refer to them as a Terracotta color.
- White Ear Lobes: Penedesenca have an ear lobe that defies the ear lobe to egg color correlation. This breed should have a white earlobe or at least 2/3rds white.
- Slate Legs: This Breed should also have slate legs for most varieties and white to slate on the Crele color.

All these characteristics will be traits we will be selecting for with our breeding flocks in the future.

Hatching Eggs In 2024 Hatching eggs will be priced At $4.00 per egg. For Every 5 eggs you buy, you recieve 1 free. Max order will be 15 eggs to stay in the best fertility window for shipped eggs. Possibility of more depending on the ladies lay that week.

Pricing Straight Run Chicks Out of the Hatcher Only will be $8 each.
Taking this option will mean you will receive what hatches from the specific batch your order will fulfill.
Example. You order 15 st. run Penedesenca chicks from us to be picked up at hatch or shipped to you after hatch. Say 15 chicks hatch and there are 9 pullets and 6 cockerels then those are yours at $8 each.
Say 15 chicks hatch and 9 are cockerels and 6 are pullets then those are yours at $8 each. Say 20 hatch and 10 are pullets and 10 are cockerels. I’ll give you the 8 pullets and 7 cockerels. I’ll be nice 😊. Unless you request more cockerels in your order.

BRINGING 3 COLOR VARIETIES IN
Crele, Black, & Partridge
The Penedesenca is such a rare breed that there are very few breeders out there. A few hatcheries have 1 of the color varieties but no more. When looking for a cock to place over my girls there was very little replies made and no crele cocks to be found. I could of gone back to Privett, but decided to give Glen Downs at Sandhill Preservation Center a chance. He was instrumental in the preservation of the Erminette and has all 3 color varieties at Sandhills.

We are bringing in all 3 color varieties to be able to help preserve this rare and interesting breed. We may have to purchase more than 1 round of chicks to create a small breeding flock of these varieties but we look forward to doing so!
